Singapore's Achilles Heel

According to Senior Lecturer (NUS Real Estate) and Director of Sustainable Asian Cities Malone-Lee Lai Choo, Singapore's built up land has a net density of 12,400 persons per square km, compared to Hong Kong's net density of 26,000 persons per sq km. Therefore, this expert thinks that there is room to increase built-up land to 70 per cent and for the population to grow to 6.5 million.

Like all talking eggheads, this baloney spouting Malone ignores the fact that Hong Kong has a hinterland to retreat to. Heck, most of their hardworking males probably have a 2nd, 3rd or 4th wife installed in Shenzhen or similar rural respite from the urban jungle. After a harrowing work in the city, they have a countryside to retire to for a healthy family life.

How crowded exactly is Singapore? The Kaiser Family Foundation's global health gateway is an online clearinghouse for the latest data and information on the U.S. role in global health. The Foundation receives substantial support for the global health gateway and its work on global health policy from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. According to its database made available online, Singapore tops the country list for population density.

If you are still looking for the Swiss standard of living promised, wake up. The other interesting data extract shows that lots of thriving countries are experiencing low population growth rates too. So why is Thailand, Switzerland and Japan not shipping in aliens by the plane loads? Obviously, GDP growth and productivity is fueled not only by sheer numbers - unless all the planners intend is a sprawling ghetto of sweat shops.

The Economist (21 April 2012, "China's Achilles heel")) touched on how China's one child policy, not unlike Singapore's stop-at-two, resulted in the total fertility rate falling from 2.6 over the past 30 years to 1.56. Another clear example of why social engineering in the hands of myopic bureaucrats is so dangerous. But the article also highlights that America is one of the rare examples where a country can utilise mass immigration to build a skilled labour force. And that's because America is an open society with a long history of immigration and strong legal and political institutions, and we might add, healthy respect for human rights. Dictatorships in the tropics trying to duplicate the formula produce only nation wide misery. They may dig up academics to justify their harebrained schemes, but the ugly results are plainly visible in our overloaded trains, cramped housing, precipitous wage gap, and growing social friction.

  2. The number of Singaporeans grew by 16%.
The number of PRs grew by 91%,
The number of foreigners grew by 58%.
    The workforce grew by 34%,
    That is for 2001 - 2011.

45% PRs+Foreigners & 55% Singaporeans workers. With this kind of core, those in uniform has every right to question who is doing the protecting while others are reaping, let alone getting us to celebrate 8/9.

Wayang engagement or not, one has to be living in serious coma (not slumber) or denial to think those speaking out for Singaporean first are expressing xenophobia. The facts have spoken for itself for the longest time, and living proofs everyday bloody waking day. We are beyond wake-up call. It's boot-out call..let's start the ball rolling.

  3. The best possible govt for singapore is one with multiple parties. PAP alone CANNOT and will NOT represent all segments of singaporean voices. A healthy society will need party that has strong voices for workers, for civil liberties or other sub groups. The same argument that we need good citizens of all shapes and forms, likewise, we need plurality of opposition parties of all diversity so that they are forced to work together, negotiate the trade off for the people. Otherwise, a single dominant party like PAP will continue to run roughshod on its people.

  4. Unless, of course, the hinterland was Malaysia. Medisave could be used there as well, along with sending our old folks there for retirement.

I wonder if independence seems necessary? We are after all a city and a business inc. instead of a nation.

Our HFM disease has reached epidemic levels. Our TB is also on the increase.
Next I can look forward to SARs-type outbreak to see how many lives it's going to take with such density planning. When it happens, Malone Lee should be and Janil should be in the forefront of national service.

Does a ship have to go down with its captain?

Apparently - Mr Lee Kuan Yew, who is on the final lap, together with his son - seem intent on running Singapore into the ground.

  9. The robustness of America's political system is simply amazing.
Who's ever heard of Obama until he got elected as President?

But such is the depth of its talent pool.
And the free-wheeling system that encourages leaders to step forward to RUN for office.

American political leaders WANT to lead.
They have a vision for their country.
President Obama and family faces the risk of an assassin's bullet everyday.

Contrast with our political leaders from the you-know-who party.

"When I made the decision to join politics in 2006, pay was not a key factor.
Loss of privacy, public scrutiny on myself and my family and loss of personal time were ..."

"The disruption to my career was also an important consideration.
I had some ground to believe that my family would not suffer a drastic change in the standard of living even though I experienced a drop in my income.
So it is with this recent pay cut.

If the balance is tilted further in the future, it will make it harder for any one considering political office."

Sounds a lot like "Me, Me Me" everywhere in the Singapore statement.

How much is Obama paid for risking the assassin's bullet everyday?
    Loss of privacy?
Yeah. President Obama risks an extreme and permanent loss of privacy everyday. From an assassin's bullet.
Anybody hear him whine about his salary over the last 4 years?

By the way, there is one aspect of that American model that intrigue me.
The elected President & his VP can call upon any US citzen to serve in his Administration ! No need to be an "MP" or Representative or Senator in their context. Yes, even their opponents.eg Present Secretary of State Hillary Clitton. She incidentally, had to resign as a US Senator. ....... Paving way for a by election.....
Lest, anyone summaries that I am pro-USA, no , I am not. Admiring what is Good everywhere need no apologies.

  10. Frankly LKY or PAP may be digging their own graves sooner if they are not careful with importing new immigrants en masse. How many filthy rich corrupt PRC, Indian or Filipino citizens can they attract ?

In time the new citizens will also find Singapore a living hell when housing & cars become out of reach even for those mid-income earners. The trend of voting for the opposition is already happening in Middle East, Europe, Japan, Taiwan and even Myanmmar etc.

Sooner or later this will happen to Singapore as voters will simply vote for the opposition to vent their frustration.

Please continue to be arrogant, LKY & son.

  11. US is much more successful in attracting very capable people from all parts of the world because its system allows and respects individual development. Singapore as a society is too conformist and very stifling and doesn't respect individual rights to 'travel' on a very different path compared to that set by the state.

Singapore is also too addicted to property speculation and development. How do you expect society as a whole to produce bright people like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, when it is more profitable to buy/sell properties?

Singapore will remain at best a 2nd or 3rd rate type of country!

  12. A lawyer runs a stop sign and gets pulled over by a Police. He thinks that he is smarter than the Police because he is a lawyer & is certain that he has a better education than any Cop. He decides to prove this to himself and have some fun at the Officer's expense.

Officer says, "License and registration, please."
    Lawyer says, "What for?"
Officer says, " You didn't come to a complete stop at the stop sign."
Lawyer says, "I slowed down, and no one was coming."
Officer says, "You still didn't come to a complete stop. License and registration, please."
    Lawyer says, "What's the difference?"
Officer says, "The difference is, you have to come to complete stop, that's the law. License and registration, please!"
Lawyer says, "If you can show me the legal difference between slow down and stop, I'll give you my license and registration; and you give me the ticket. If not, you let me go and don't give me the ticket."
Officer says, "Sounds fair. Exit your vehicle, sir."
At this point, the Officer takes out his nightstick and starts beating the ever-loving crap out of the lawyer and says, "Do you want me to stop or just slow down?

  14. This Malone-Lee Lai Choo is suggesting that Singapore build flats the same sizes as Hong Kong's rabbit warrens to accomodate 6.5 million people. (Ironically, although Singapore's HDB flats are nothing grand to boast about, the Hongkies envy us). And since there is insufficient land, there are still the islands of Pulau Ubin and Pulau Tekong to fall back on - this is attributable to Liu Thai Ker, former CEO of HDB, former CEO & Chief Planner of the URA, Chairman of Advisory Board Centre for Liveable Cities, who advised Singaporeans to "break the psychological barrier and face issues of higher density". May I also suggest the former KTM rail corridor and Bukit Brown, and whatever cemeteries still around.

When this government touts dialogue, engagement, consultation, etc, the modus operandi consists of recruiting it's mouthpieces to brainwash Singkies into accepting what is already a fait accompli - see the case of Bukit Brown. So Singkies, be prepared for a further onslaught of immigrants. The more the propaganda noises, the more certain it is.

From first world Swiss standard of living for the exclusives (the elites) to out of this world congestion and economic inequity for the mere mortals, the inclusives - What Progress! What is Singapore's Achilles Heel - it's Overcrowding, stupid, and a comatose government.

  15. You might want to know some background of this Malone-Lee Lai Choo before you comment:
    1. She was a planner with URA and later left for NUS to be an academia. She remains as senior lecturer while many others in same cohort have moved on to be associate professor during the Shieh (previous president)'s era to remove poor performance academia - those with poor research ability will remain on teaching track and not promoted to associate professor. This tells you Malone-Lee's grade among her cohort of NUS academia.
    2. She earned her PhD from Japan Tokyo University by part-time distance learning with Sim Loo Lee as her supervisor.
    3. Who is this Sim Loo Lee? Sim was formally a school teacher and earned her PhD in the then University of Singapore before joining as academia. Most her formal teachers and professor did not expect her to be HOD with NUS department of Real Estates for her works. She is in the case of HDB/Sim Lim (developer)'s high HDB flat prices but the case has been covered up now. She was the director of HDB board (due to her NUS HOD appointment) and also a paid director of Sim Lim developer. Some source said she has been paid up to $250K as the independent director for Sim Lim developer. Sim is single and personally likes very much people to call her 'professor' or 'doctor'. Sim was trained by herself a real estate lawyer and has been called to the bar but strangely never practiced nor taught laws. Sim is now already over 60+ but NUS still kept her as associate professor there without producing any research nor teaching. This tells you something in NUS? Why mentions Sim and here we are talking about Malone-Lee Lai Choo? Because this background tells something about Malone-Lee?
    4. Malone-Lee married a very mature Australian, Malone. She is sort of SPG. She like to speak with an western ascent to draw others' attention.
    5. Malone-Lee has been on teaching track academia (as against research track) and never produced any significant research so far. This tells you Malone-Lee is never a research scholar. It is strange indeed that she has been appointed to be the director of Centre for Sustainable Asian Cities. This strange event is however common in NUS. It has to do with her boss, Faculty dean Heng's preference and Heng is of course another political animal. Which dean or HOD is not political animal in NUS anyway?
    6. Malone-Lee has before advocated low-rise high density development for Singapore (apparently, learning from Paris, France). However, logic tells you how low-rise can go with high-density housing. The fact is Singapore's housing (and Hong Kong's) has to be high-rise to get high-density. That is why HDB builds tall buildings. This tells Malone-Lee's sort of academic quality.
    7. Under Malone-Lee, Centre for Sustainable Asian Cities has worked with a Swiss university on a joint research project that ranks Singapore as the most livable city in the world. This result has failed to get accepted by the academic world. This tells what sort of research works being done in that centre.

So, what do you think when this so-called expert tells you she thinks that there is room to increase built-up land to 70 per cent and for the population to grow to 6.5 million. Low-rise high-density development? Perhaps, she is thinking to dig the ground to lower the height and yet achieve high-density housing. Very brilliant idea, indeed!

Yes, they were part responsible for our success in the early years but now they are to be fully blamed for the situation Singapore is in. $600 for a cleaner job in a country where the standards of living requires $1700 minimum. After 40 years of work, giving up 20% of your monthly salary and you do not have enough to retire. Yet we have the highest paid stooges in the world. What a joke.
